Here is the latest "scoop" for Bimini Sands HomeOwners.
We traveled here in December 2011 from the US to South Bimini Bahamas via Continental so this information is very current. Whether you boat or fly in (private or commercial) when you clear customs and immigration you will be faced with these new regulations.
When we arrived in Bimini we were told that we could only have a visa for 40 days (1 US citizen, 1 resident alien) and that we would need to check in at the airport to have our visa extended for another 40 days. It didn't matter that we have owned property in the Bahamas for over 10 years. The officer said there should not be a problem with extension, but it seems that this is a big change from the past. The government page http://www.bahamas.gov.bs still shows that US citizen's can stay up to 8 months, but that it is up the the local official to make the decision.
Another change from the past is traveling with your pet. In the past we paid duty to actually "import" our dog and then regain entry with that receipt. This is no longer the case! I was almost turned away in July at the airport (after several calls to Nassau they let us stay) and then again in December I tried with the receipt and was told NO! Fortunately I had an official permit in my purse and all was well ...
You can download the import form HERE that needs to be sent to Ministry of Agriculture in Nassau. I know that it is best to be prepared when it comes to your precious pet because this could certainly ruin your vacation plans.
